Description

I consider this my best capture to date. I had the best seeing during a planetary session I've ever had.

This image is a manually tracked capture of Jupiter comprised of four 12,000 frame captures.

Conditions:
  • Variably foggy conditions. Transparency was 1/5 to 3/5.
  • Jupiter approximately 60 degrees altitude
  • Seeing 5/5

Equipment
  • 14.7" DIY dobsonian with Lockwood primary
  • 2.7x APM Coma Correcting barlow with Svbony extension tubes. Brings effective multiplication factor to 3.6x
  • ZWO ASI224MC with Baader IR Cut filter

Capture
  • Manually tracked
  • Position Jupiter just at the edge of the field, start recording, let it drift, press pause when it reaches the other side of the field, re-position, and start again until 12,000 frames captured. Repeat several times.
  • Firecapture
  • 6ms exposure
  • Gain between 275 and 310 depending on fog thickness.
  • Set ROI to full width, but cropped the height to get to 166FPS.

Processing
  • PIPP to crop and stabilize.
  • AutoStakkert to stack.
  • Kept 50% best frames.
  • Sharpen and color correct each stacked image in Astra Image. Lucy Richardson Deconvolution.
  • Of the several that were taken, there were four very good images that were Derotated in WinJupos
  • Final levels, smart sharpening, and unsharp mask in Photoshop.
